Courses for Teachers

DAI runs training courses aimed at Teachers and other educators. Places on these courses are limited so early application is advisable. We run these courses several times each year, in different locations, in response to demand. A course certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. You may then apply for inclusion on the DAI tutor lists which are available to members of the DAI.

Course for Primary Teachers

The Dyslexia Association of Ireland runs a training course for Primary School Teachers. This course is offered to qualified primary level teachers who are registered or eligible for registration with the Teaching Council. The course may be of particular relevance to Learning Support and Resource Teachers. At the end of the course, teachers will have an understanding of what dyslexia is, how it can be identified and how it can be supported in classrooms and schools. This course is also open to second level teachers, especially those in learning support or SEN roles. Other education or support personnel are also welcome to apply, including speech and language therapists, psychologists and SNAs.

A course certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. Qualified teachers who have completed this course may apply for inclusion on the Dyslexia Association of Ireland tutor lists which are available to members of the DAI.

Course for Second Level Teachers

The Dyslexia Association of Ireland runs a training course for Second Level Teachers. This course is offered to qualified second level teachers who are registered or eligible for registration with the Teaching Council. The course may be of particular relevance to Learning Support and Resource Teachers, as well as subject teachers. At the end of the course, teachers will have an understanding of what dyslexia is, how it can be identified and how it can be supported in classrooms and schools. Other education or support personnel are also welcome to apply, including speech and language therapists, psychologists and SNAs.

A course certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. Qualified teachers who have completed this course may apply for inclusion on the Dyslexia Association of Ireland tutor lists which are available to members of the DAI.

Course for SNAs

The Dyslexia Association of Ireland also offers a course for SNAs on dyslexia. The course is open to SNAs and other interested professionals. The courses focuses on practical strategies to support students with dyslexia in the classroom. At the end of the course, attendees will have an understanding of what dyslexia is, and how it can be supported in classrooms and schools.

Dyslexia and Literacy Assessment Course for Teachers

DAI is offering a new Dyslexia and Literacy Assessment Course for Teachers. The course has been designed to provide information and training for Primary and Second level teachers on the various screening tests for Dyslexia (both at Primary and Secondary School) as well as the different literacy attainment tests used for RACE, DARE, and Irish exemption applications. This course is suitable for teachers in Primary and Secondary school, particularly Learning Support/Special Education teachers. The course covers:

  • A brief introduction to dyslexia and literacy difficulties
  • Test theory and psychometric terminology
  • Dyslexia Screeners – Primary and Secondary level
  • Administration and scoring of Literacy attainment tests (incl. WIAT and WRAT)
  • Test analysis and interpretation
  • Important issues for applications for RACE, DARE and Irish exemption.
